EUGENE, Ore. - The Sheldon Irish Girls Soccer team lives by three words: Joy. Fight. Family.

It’s a philosophy Head Coach Adam Barton preaches before every match.

It’s also a philosophy senior forward and leader, Grace Giles, takes to heart.

“She really has a joy for the game and she has a joy for her teammates and she fights really hard,” Barton said. “I think she plays a big part in the leadership of our family. I think she embodies all three of those really well.”

This season has rejuvenated Giles’ joy for the game. She says her teammates make all the difference.

“It has been probably the best season of my life,” Giles said. “This season I’ve just been surrounded by girls that love the sports and love each other…It’s been cool to really value that and get to play with my best friends.”

No. 4 Sheldon will play No. 5 Sunset in the OSAA State quarterfinals Saturday, Nov. 5.

The Irish defeated the Apollos 1-0 during the 2016 pre-season, marking the first time they’ve defeated Sunset in more than 10 years.

Giles scored the lone goal of the match in the final minute.
