Police: Dillard man arrested after bailing from moving car during police pursuit
WINSTON, Ore. – A Dillard man was arrested following a police pursuit in Winston on Wednesday, June 14.
Around 7:45 that evening, a Winston police officer attempted to pull over a black ’94 Honda Civic on Carter Street when the driver failed to yield and led the officer on a short pursuit, the report said.
Police said two males exited the vehicle while it was still moving at the top of a hill and, as they attempted to flee, the car crashed into a fence.
Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police troopers arrived and the passenger was found a short time later hiding behind the Safari Inn.
The driver, later identified as 18-year-old Gavin Kyle Simmons, of Dillard, turned himself in the next day and was lodged at the Douglas County jail.
According to police, Simmons was charged with “fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer in a vehicle, feeling or attempting to elude a police officer on foot, reckless driving, reckless endangering of another person, second degree criminal mischief, second degree disorderly conduct, interfering with a peace officer and failing to perform the duties of a driver when property is damaged.”
