Over $37,000 raised by Umpqua Strong 9K + 5K Run/Walk
“I’m amazed at how supportive and loving this community is when it counts. From the sponsors, to the participants, to the volunteers, what took place was a miracle and a blessing to our community,” said race director Bryan Trenkle.
With support from local sponsors throughout the county, including presenting sponsor TerraFirma Foundation Systems, the 2017 event was a day filled with "an overwhelming sense of DETERMINATION, UNITY, and HOPE," the organization saiid in a news release.
Individuals participated in the event from as far away as Honolulu, Hawaii.
It drew a total of 942 participants this year, as well as having over 75 volunteers.
Funds raised from the second annual event will be distributed to various local agencies providing services and support to those most in need in our community. Among them include Umpqua Community College Foundation, Greater Douglas United Way, the Family Development Center, Battered Persons’ Advocacy, Salvation Army, and others.
“We are continually honored to be able to express a legacy of hope out of the tragedy the Umpqua Valley was faced with two years ago. This community is unparalleled in heart and strength and to see that in action is amazing. The participation we had for year two- despite getting a really late start- just shows how valuable the message of Umpqua Strong is and inspires us to make an even greater impact within the community in the years to come,” said Umpqua Strong board member Randi Feland.
The organization has made the decision to start planning the third annual run/walk for Saturday, September 29, 2018.
