COOS BAY, Ore. -- A spinoff of one of Coos County's vocal competitions for teens opens this month at the Egyptian Theatre.

Got Talent Coos County, formerly Bay Area Teen Idol, will showcase the talents local youth possess during their opening night June 21.

Got Talent Coos County is a teen talent showcase that promotes a drug, alcohol and tobacco-free lifestyle. It takes place over the summer for Coos County and Reedsport area teens 13-18 years old.

It was formerly known as Bay Area Teen Idol, which ran 16 seasons through 2017 as a "Drug Free Communities" event. The program has expanded to showcase talents including singing, dancing, acting, instrument playing and more.

"This year’s competitors come from all corners of Coos County," organizers say.

18 contestants will be performing in the monthly show to earn the place at the top.

"I have always been impressed with the amount of talent and the 'no fear-all in attitude' that young people have today" said Stephanie Kilmer producer of Got Talent Coos County. "We have witnessed spectacular talent with all the events that K-DOCK Radio is involved in. We are pleased to be able to expand on the success of Teen Idol and really showcase what our youth have to offer."

Contestants will compete weekly for scores that will produce the winner at the September finals. Kilmer believes it will be an exciting show each month for both the competitors and the audience. There will also be an opportunity for each month's audience to weigh in on the "People's Choice" award. For the finals, the top scorers will win their share of $5,000 in prizes, including cash, SWOCC Tuition and merchandise provided by local and regional merchants.

Because the audience is just as important, Kilmer says the program "is pleased to welcome back our corporate partners who allow us to provide this event to the community."

Admission is $3 per person, but organizers say no one is ever turned away for inability to pay. All admission fees are put back into the program and for competition prizes.

The opening show will feature 2017 Bay Area Teen Idol Alliah Gonzalez and the all-girl band Buzz Krill. The Egyptian Theatre will also be selling concessions.

Show dates are June 21st, July 12th, August 16th and September 13th.

All shows take place at the Egyptian Theatre, 229 S. Broadway, Coos Bay OR.
