'Burn to learn' exercise is real-world training for Coos Bay firefighters
COOS BAY, Ore, -- You might see smoke rising in the Libby area this weekend as the Coos Bay Fire Department will be conducting a "Burn to Learn" exercise.
The event will take place at a house on Strawberry Road.
Firefighters say the exercise provides real-life, hands-on training.
During that time, both ends of Garden Lane will remain open.
The street will only be closed at the intersection of Strawberry Road.
Residents are asked to park any vehicles that may need to be used during the day on Garden Lane.
"We'll light a small fire, let it build up, let some of our newer volunteers and students see how fire develops and how it grows and the different stages," says Coos Bay Fire Department Chief Mark Anderson. "When we get as much training value out of it as we can, then we go ahead and let it go."
The exercise will take place Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until about 1 p.m.
