UPDATE: Marina drowning victim identified

Police respond to possible drowning at Sioux City Marina

10:00 P.M. UPDATE: It's the second fatal accident in the Missouri River in under a week and this one claimed the life of a Sioux City man.

The initial call came in around 8:30 Sunday morning when police received reports of a man acting in a "bizarre manner" near the public boat ramp on Larson Park Road.

An hour and a half later, an individual at the Marina who was checking his boat heard a splash and found a male in his 30s in the water.

When he attempted to assist that man, later identified as 34-year-old Allen Clay of Sioux City, he slipped under the water and did not resurface.

That gentleman, when we first arrived, he had went down to work on his boat and he heard someone yelling. He called 911 right away and tried to assist the gentleman. He pinpointed us to the general area where he was right away and that's where we started searching," said Assistant Fire Chief Dan Cougill.

Siouxland Dive Rescue was on hand to assist in the search.

The body of the man was pulled from the water about an hour later.

This is the second incident in the Missouri River in under a week.

Rescue crews and divers pulled the car, believed to be that of a missing family of three, from the water yesterday after it was seen plunging in to the river on Monday.

I think both of the recent incidents that we've dealt with are unfortunate accidents. They're not the results of boating accidents or enjoying the river for its recreational value. I think, again, we have a very unfortunate accident," Cougill said.

The investigations in to both Monday's accident and today's drowning are still ongoing.

4:00 P.M. UPDATE: Sioux City Police have identified the man who drowned in the Missouri River Sunday morning.

34-year-old Allen Clay of Sioux City was pulled from the water in the marina near the Hilton Garden Inn just after 10:00 A.M.

Police say they received a call of an individual acting in a "bizarre manner" near the public boat ramp off of Larson Park Road around 8:30 A.M. but officers were unable to locate the individual.

A few hours later, a boat owner was checking his boat in the private boat dock when they heard a splash and found a male in the water a few slips down.

The male slipped under the surface of the water and did not resurface.

Sioux City Police, Sioux City Fire Rescue and the Siouxland Dive Team responded to the rescue call.

Because of the lack of current in the marina and the relatively shallow water depth, rescuers were able to enter the water quickly in the location that the man was last seen and recovered the body of the individual.

A short time later, an unidentified woman flagged down a SCFR Commander to report her adult son missing.

The investigation into the drowning is still ongoing.
