ALSEA, Ore. - The death of a woman in her 20s found in a remote forested area appears suspicious, the Benton County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies responded to the scene outside Alsea around 5 p.m. Monday.

The unidentified white woman appears to be in her 20s, the sheriff's office said.

"A preliminary review indicates the death is suspicious pending a finding from the Oregon State Medical Examiners Office," the sheriff's office said.

According to Undersheriff Greg Ridler, it appears the woman died from a gunshot wound.

Ridler said investigators believe the death is recent. It possibly occurred over the weekend, but the weather is making it difficult to determine.

Ridler said their main focus fight now is identifying the woman.

The sheriff's office said there are no known missing persons cases that match this victim description. They don't think it's related to other suspicious deaths in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Chris Duffitt at (541) 766-6858 or call the confidential tip line at (541) 753-8477.
