'We wish for peace for the family': Alsea residents shocked by news of body found in woods
ALSEA, Ore. - Investigators are trying to identify a young woman found dead from an apparent gunshot wound in a remote part of the Coast Range.
The woman was found several miles up a logging road just a few miles outside the small town of Alsea.
"We saw quite a few unmarked cars go past, ambulances, the sheriff," Bethany Zavaleta said Tuesday.
The Benton County Sheriff's Office said the woman appears to be in her 20s. She was found around 5 p.m. Monday on private timber land by security personnel.
Investigators said the woman was shot, possibly as recently as last weekend.
"The circumstances surrounding the positioning of the body indicated a violent or unexpected death," Undersheriff Greg Ridler said.
Ridler said the investigation has been difficult.
There are no known missing persons cases that match this victim.
And they don't think it's related to other suspicious deaths in the area.
Investigators think an autopsy will answer more of their questions.
"But until we know who we're dealing with and what are the circumstances, it's going to be slow moving and that's very frustrating," Ridler said
The news is a shock to people who live nearby.
Zavaleta said not much happens in Alsea.
"We all take pride in the fact that we're really close knit and our kids are really safe here," she said. "And everyone here kind of knows each other, so stuff like this is a very surprising."
Zavaleta hopes investigators are able to find out what happened.
"We wish for peace for the family," she said.
