Toy Drive: 'They would like to get something and get the happiness too'

NBC 16 and Les Schwab are partnering together to collect toys for children in need in Lane County. The toys will go to local non-profits. If you would like to donate, bring unwrapped toys to any Les Schwab location in Lane County or to KMTR. (SBG photo)

EUGENE, Ore. – Thanksgiving is just days away, but in downtown Eugene, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Community members will gather at Kesey Square Friday night for “Light Up Downtown.”

At the event, NBC 16 is spreading awareness of its holiday toy drive. We’re partnering with Les Schwab to make sure every child in Lane County has something to unwrap on Christmas morning.

You can help by donating unwrapped toys at any Les Schwab Tire in Lane County or KMTR NBC 16.

Our goal is to fill the NBC 16 newsroom with thousands of toys.

The toys will benefit the Brattain House in Springfield, the Relief Nursery and the Salvation Army to make sure the gifts go to kids that need them the most.

Many of the children and families receiving the gifts are homeless and can’t afford basic necessities, let alone presents.

For some kids, this will be the only gift they receive for the holidays.

“They would like to get something and get the happiness too. The warm feeling that they're special. And they want to receive something too,” said Silvia Ceja from The Brattain House.

“Les Schwab is really excited to be a part of it. Myself, most of us here at the store, have families. So it means a great deal to help a child in need this holiday,” said Jason Gale from Les Schwab Tires in Eugene.

The Toy Drive ends December 20.

At the downtown lighting party, the festivities continue until 6:30 p.m.
