Suspect rolls car in accident after fleeing cops in traffic stop

Police pursuit ends in rollover crash in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A rollover crash happened in Springfield Monday night during a police pursuit after an attempted traffic stop for an illegal lane change.

The driver, 53-year-old Damon Rhudell Moreno, fled into downtown Springfield after police attempted to pull him over. He accelerated west over the Springfield Bridge toward Franklin Boulevard.

Police pursued the vehicle, but when the driver was unable to negotiate a corner at a traffic circle, he flipped, rolling the car through the construction barrier.

Police then detained him without incident. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation, but did not appear to suffer any major injuries, police said.

Westbound traffic was blocked for a short time while the scene was investigated. There were no passengers in Moreno's vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

It appears that drugs and or alcohol played a part in the incident, police said, and the suspect has felony warrants from California.

Moreno will be lodged in the Lane County Jail when he's released from the hospital, police said.

He is charged with DUII, Reckless Driving and Elude by Vehicle.
