Springfield home to first ever outdoor pickleball courts in Lane County
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Some athletes say pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the country, and now Springfield is home to the first ever outdoor pickleball courts in Lane County.
Willamalane and the Emerald Valley Pickleball Club renovated old tennis courts into brand new pickleball courts.
More than 150 people got a free pickleball lesson at Meadow Park Saturday morning.
A former University of Oregon tennis coach says many tennis players transition to pickleball later in life.
"A lot of people can’t play tennis because it’s just too vigorous and a little bit traumatic for knees and hips,” said former coach Buzz Summers. “They can play this game more easily, so they may come from tennis over to pickleball."
During the month of July, the Emerald Valley Pickleball Club will teach pickleball classes every Wednesday.
Those will be held at Meadow Park in Springfield.
