Fire at downtown Post Office closes a block of Olive Street

An electrical fire at the downtown Post Office closed a block of Olive Street from 5th to 6th avenues Monday afternoon while firefighters investigated. (SBG)

EUGENE, Ore. – Emergency personnel closed Olive Street between 5th and 6th avenues as they responded to a fire at the post office Monday afternoon.

Eugene Springfield Fire responded to the US Post Office at 4:01 p.m.

They contained it before it caused any interior damage.

The cause is still under investigation.

A facility manager at the post office said they evacuated the three buildings after a staff member smelled smoke and pulled the alarm.

The roads reopened before 5 p.m.
