Sheriff: Lookingglass man found dead at crash scene; passenger taken to Eugene hospital

TENMILE, Ore. - A minivan crashed 50 feet down an embankment Thursday, killing the driver and sending the passenger to a hospital in Eugene.

A caller to 911 just after 6:30 p.m. reported coming across a crash near Coos Bay Wagon Road and Reston Road.

"The caller reported he was transporting one victim from the scene to the Tenmile Store to meet responders," the sheriff's office reported, "and that a second was unresponsive at the scene."

Deputies found a 1992 Plymouth Voyager 50 feet down an embankment, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said.

The driver, identified as 54-year-old Charles Cranford of Lookingglass, died at the scene.

The passenger - 56-year-old Nanette Shaffer of Lookingglass - was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg and later transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend.

The crash remains under investigation.
