Sheriff: Deputies have identified the suspect shot and killed in Officer Involved Shooting
EUGENE, Ore. - The suspect who was shot and killed by a Lane County Sheriff's Deputy in an Officer Involved Shooting on Monday evening has been identified as Robert Martinez Jr., 42, of Deadwood, Oregon.
After reportedly stealing a white Honda Accord in the 500 block of Clairmont Drive, near River Road, a deputy made contact with Martinez Jr. and another passenger just before 5 p.m.
As the deputy approached the vehicle, Martinez Jr. exited the car from the driver's side and was uncooperative with the deputy. Martinez Jr., who was in possession of a firearm, was shot by the deputy and subsequently transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
The incident is being investigated by the Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation team (IDFIT), and is ongoing. The passenger of the vehicle has been identified, and is cooperating with authorities, though he is not in custody.
The passenger has not been charged with any criminal offense, and will not be identified at this time due to the nature of the investigation.
Following the shooting of Martinez Jr., a large presence of law enforcement canvassed the neighborhood in the Santa Clara area of Eugene, aware of the possibility of a second suspect that was on the loose.
Officials identified a "home of interest" in the neighborhood, where they attempted to make contact with the people inside. Several people exited the home and were questioned by deputies and police.
While crews were canvassing the area, officials encouraged residents in the area to stay inside and lock their doors.
There are no outstanding suspects or current threats to the public in connection to this case at the current time.
