Search suspended for missing Bellingham snowboarders
MOUNT BAKER, Wash. -- The search for two Bellingham snowboarders who went missing a week ago outside the Mt. Baker area has been suspended due to bad weather.
According to Whatcom County Sheriff's Office deputy Mark Jilk, there has been no better leads or information that could narrow the search area right now.
Friends and family believe 22-year-old Jake Amancio and 20-year-old Drew Lenz were in the backcountry outside the Mt. Baker Ski Area.
Whatcom County Search and Rescue will continue to monitor the weather conditions, according to Jilk. If the weather cooperates, crews will go back on the ground with a device that can find people buried in the snow.
The family of the two snowboarders is still continuing to do their own search, Jilk said.
The weather is supposed to remain the same for much of the week. Whatcom County doesn't anticipate that the Search and Rescue team will be able to pick up the search this week, according to Jilk.
According to Jilk, if they do get a break in the weather, they will try to return to search.
