Prefontaine immortalized in Coos Bay
COOS BAY, Ore. - The legendary distance runner, Steve Prefontaine, is being honored in his hometown of Coos Bay.
A mural of "Pre" is being created on walls along South Broadway street.
The finished mural will show Pre running at Marshfield High School, the University of Oregon and as an Olympian.
Los Angeles based "Old City Artists" started painting the mural Saturday morning. The owner of the company says he grew up hearing about Prefontaine.
"I'm born and raised in Portland and I played football at the University of Oregon so the story of Steve Prefontaine was a story that I heard from all the coaches I ever had and it's just an honor to be able to honor him," said Erik Nicolaisen, owner of Old City Artists.
The mural design was chose by Prefontaine's sister, Linda, and the Prefontaine Foundation.
Nicolaisen says he expects to mural to be completed by Wednesday.
