Police: Three people die in Highway 20 head-on collision
EDDYVILLE, Ore. – Three people died in a fatal crash on Highway 20 Wednesday evening, Oregon State Police said.
Oregon State Police troopers responded to a report of the head-on, three-vehicle crash at 5 p.m. at milepost 31, east of Newport.
After investigating, they said a 2015 Chevy Equinox SUV was traveling westbound and a 2005 Honda Odyssey van was traveling in the same direction a short distance behind the Chevy.
Police said a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup truck travelling eastbound crossed the center line and crashed head-on into the Chevy. They said the Honda couldn’t stop in time and crashed into the other two vehicles.
The Dodge caught fire and became engulfed in flames, police said.
Officials said the two occupants in the Dodge were found dead at the scene. They have not yet been identified.
The driver of the Chevy, Michael Steenkolk, 52, of Toledo, also died at the scene, police said. His passenger, Kathleen Olive, 48, of Toledo, was airlifted to Emanuel Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said the two people in the Honda received minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to Samaritan Hospital in Newport.
Officials closed Highway 20 for approximately three hours.
