Police search for Springfield man who fled after stealing car, escaped pursuit
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Springfield police are seeking help from the public in locating a man who led them on a brief pursuit Sunday night after they spike-stripped the stolen car he was driving.
50-year-old Kevin Rene Hendrickson reportedly stole a car from a house where a friend had been house-sitting while the owners were out of town, police said.
Police caught up to Hendrickson near Maplewood Elementary School, where he was parked inside the stolen white Subaru Legacy.
Police arrived in the area and deployed spike strips at the egress points, but he fled in the vehicle.
He ran over the spike strips which flattened the two front tires on the car, police said. Hendrickson was able to flee, eventually driving to the area of the Hayden Bridge Boat Landing off Marcola Road.
Police said Hendrickson then fled the vehicle on foot, crossed into the brushy area via an opening in a fence, and jumped from the center of a train trestle bridge an estimated 30 feet to the dark waters below.
Police searched by water and air for Hendrickson but were not able to find him. He's believed to have floated downstream and exited onto the bank.
"He has escaped but police believe he is still in the area and has friends and criminal associates in Springfield and Eugene," the police department said in a news release.
Hendrickson is 6' 1" tall, weighs approximately 200 lbs, has shaved or gray stubble hair and hazel eyes. He routinely wears glasses.
Hendrickson is wanted now by Springfield police for charges including Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Eluding police, Reckless Driving, Interfering with police , Disorderly Conduct, Hit & Run Property Damage and Interfering with police resulting from this incident.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Springfield Police Department at (541) 726-3714.
Police believe a passing motorist may have driven over a spike strip and requests that any motorist who may have ended up with a flat tire to contact SPD with any damage to report.
