SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Officers found a man dead in the driveway of a Springfield home while responding to a report of shots fired in a "chaotic" dispute Friday, Springfield Police said.

The 36-year-old man appears to have died from a gunshot wound, police said.

Investigators are now conducting a murder investigation with the help of the Oregon State Police and the Lane County District Attorney.

Police said the shooter is in custody.

The suspect and the victim knew one another.

Neither the suspect nor the victim lived at the home but were known to "frequent" the house at 1167 35th Street, police said.

Police asked the public to avoid the area.

Police are familiar with the address, having responded to 8 calls for service at the home in the last 4 years. The calls ranged from reports of possible criminal activity to "disruptions," Lt. Scott McKee said.
