If Teresa from the IRS calls, just hang up: Eugene man swindled out of $9,800

"Be suspicious of anyone who directs you to pay debt via gift cards," Lt. Scott McKee said, "especially Teresa from the IRS."

EUGENE, Ore. - A Eugene man lost $9,800 and 4 hours of his life to a phoney IRS tax collector who told him he could pay off back taxes with gift cards from Target, Walmart and Best Buy, Springfield Police said.

The caller - who identified herself as "Teresa" from the IRS - got the man on the phone Thursday.

She said he owed $9,800 in back taxes, and told him he could pay it off by buying gift cards at est Buy in Springfield, Target in Springfield, Walmart on Goodpasture in Eugene and Target on West 11th Avenue.

The man spent Thursday afternoon rounding up the cards. Then he gave the codes to Teresa.

At some point, he realized he'd been swindled.

"Be suspicious of anyone who directs you to pay debt via gift cards," Lt. Scott McKee said, "especially Teresa from the IRS."
