Fire in North Eugene High shed investigated as arson
EUGENE, Ore. - Police are investigating as a possible arson a fire that burned a shed full of athletic equipment at a high school Wednesday night.
The fire did $70,000 or more in damage to the shed and its contents at North Eugene High School, said Kerry Delf at Eugene 4J School District.
The school is still determining exactly what was in the shed. Delf said it was mostly track and field equipment, like uniforms, track shoes, hurdles, pole vaults and bars, starting blocks, tape measures and more.
Eugene Police confirmed they are conducting an arson investigation. There was a basketball game and a staff meeting taking place at the school at the time of the fire, according to police.
Investigators would like to hear from anyone who saw anything or anyone near the shed. You can call (541) 682-5111.
The shed is about 30 years ago. The school has already ordered replacement equipment ahead of the late February start of the track season, Delf said. The school's booster club is working to raise money to help pay for the replacements.
