Ducks win home opener with no-hitter over Beavers
EUGENE, Ore. - Cheridan Hawkins threw a no-hitter as the No. 2-ranked Oregon softball team beat Oregon State in its home opener at Howe Field, 10-0 in five innings.
Koral Costa's three-run home run in the fourth inning clinched the game for the Ducks.
"We just played a really good team game," said Hawkins. "We really utilized every aspect and capitalized on certain things, and I think that's what it's all about."
The game raised Oregon's overall record to 21-3, 1-0 in Pac-12.
"I really liked the intensity of the team today," said Coach Mike White. "We made the best of our opportunities and scored some runs."
The Ducks scored six runs in the second inning, thanks in part to a three-run triple from Janie Takeda. They added four runs in the fourth, the first when Jenna Lilley hit a double and stole home and the other three on Costa's home run.
Wins earlier this season on the road against Long Beach State, Iowa, Fresno State and Pacific made Winters the winningest coach in Oregon softball history. To commemorate the milestone, Winters was given an engraved bat before the game.
The Ducks will face the Beavers again at 2 p.m. Saturday at Howe Field for their second game in the three-game series.
