Chetco Bar Fire burns 99,944 acres, 7 homes lost

[UPDATE] Public community meeting with Fire managers and local officials.

The Chetco Bar Fire located in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness has grown to 99,944 acres according to the U.S. Forestry Service.

Officials say the fire has become the number one priority fire in the nation.

The Curry County Sheriff's Department confirms 7 homes have been lost.

EVACUATION SHELTER

The Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at Riley Elementary School in Gold Beach on 94350 6th Street. There is no shelter in Brookings.

The shelter provides the following services:

  • Shelter (sleeping are, cots, and blankets)
  • Food (hot meals and snacks)
  • Water and coffee
  • Showers
  • Information updates with the Fire Management Team
  • Information on pet shelter and livestock relocation assistance

People still needing assistance due to evacuations can call 888-680-1455.

CURRENT SITUATION

Officials say, minimal fire growth is expected today due to favorable weather conditions.

Fire crews made progress on Tuesday and overnight by building a direct and contingency indirect line on the south and southwestern flank of the fire. A dozer line was also established to improve defense space near homes. Crews will continue to work on improving and extending containment lines around homes.

EVACUATIONS

A Level 2 evacuation was set into place for residents in the affected area pf Cape Ferrello Road and Carpenterville Road north to Pistol River and east and west off Carpenterville Road to return to their homes. Residents will have to present a picture identification to the Curry County Sheriff's Office along with re-entry materials. The forms can be picked up at either Riley Creek Evacuation Center on 94350 6th Street in Gold Beach, Ray's Market on 906 Chetco Ave in Brookings.

ANIMALS

Residents should make arrangements to move livestock and property. Caged animals and livestock can be relocated to the Curry County Fairgrounds. Find out more information by calling 541-425-1821.

COMMUNITY MEETING

A community meeting will be held later today at 4:00 p.m. at the Curry County Fairgrounds in Gold Beach.

The Curry County Fairgrounds is located on 29392 Ellensburg Ave in Gold Beach.

SMOKE CONDITIONS

Gold Beach and Brookings-Harbor will continue to see smoke and haze in the area due to the limited air movement in the area. Rogue River Valley and Gold Beach will have unhealthy air quality throughout the day. Smoke filtering along the coast will impact visibility on Highway 101.

POSTAL SERVICE

Brookings residents affected by the Chetco Bar Fire U.S. Postal Service may pick up their mail at the Brookings Post office on 711 Spruce St. in Brookings until further notice. The Brookings Post Office is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Residents wishing to pick up mail on Saturday may do so via the Post Office's "Dutch door" between 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. All residents will need to present a photo I.D. to receive their mail.
