2 Springfield residents among 4 found dead in charred rubble of Newport motel
NEWPORT, Ore. - Two Springfield residents died in the fire that tore through a Highway 101 motel on Friday.
Sandra Kay Shoemaker, 60, and Danny Keith Shoemaker, 64, died in room 220 as a result of the fire.
The fire also killed the guests in room 221 - Tammi Sue Hepner, 51, and Allen Arthur Hepner, 63, of Portland.
The fire broke out before 6 a.m. at the Newport City Center Motel on Highway 101.
Firefighters found the bodies of the Hepners in the rubble around 4 p.m. Friday.
The bodies of the Shoemakers were found deeper inside the rubble around 8 p.m. Friday.
Newport Police said rooms 220 and 221 were engulfed in flames as the fire spread, blocking entry and exit to the rooms.
As the fire spread, the second floor collapsed onto the first floors, police said.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the Hepners and Shoemakers died as a result of the fire.
The fire started in room 103 on the ground floor.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, as is the investigation into the operation of smoke detectors.
