Matthew McConaughey: 'Rio Olympics was wonderful'
Matthew McConaughey has returned from Brazil after cheering on the U.S. athletes at the Rio Olympics, and was full of praise for the international sporting event.
The 46-year-old Oscar winner headed down south with his Brazilian-born wife Camila Alves and their three children, and said he watched so many sporting events it feels like he was there for more than a week.
Of the "wonderful experience" in Rio de Janeiro, he told Entertainment Tonight on Sunday. "I was there for one week and it feels like I saw enough to be there for a month."
"My wife and I jammed in as much as we could," he recalled. "From the beach, Copa Cabana (sic), back to the Olympic Village and back again 10 times."
However, given his wife's Brazilian heritage, he confessed the couple was on opposing sides for some sporting events, although he was gracious in defeat.
"They kinda buzzsawed us, they won that one pretty cleanly," McConaughey said of Team USA's defeat to the Brazilian team in beach volleyball. "Then we had some swimming events where there was the Brazilians versus the Americans. I came out on top of those."
"I was in the American cheering section with all the other American swimmers, so when a Brazilian was in the race, she (Alves) made sure to get out of that section to go hang out with the Brazilians," he added.
McConaughey even got to meet some of Team USA's medal-winning sports stars, including the record-breaking swimmer Michael Phelps, who became the most decorated Olympian of all time on Saturday.
The "Magic Mike" star also met up with fellow Hollywood star Leslie Jones, who is in Rio with TV network NBC thanks to her enthusiastic support of Team USA on Twitter. She posted a video on Snapchat on Friday, which showed her and McConaughey poolside in Rio.
"Real, American fans right here at the Olympics. Team USA slay all day, that's what we do!" shouts Leslie, while the actor smiles at the camera.
McConaughey and wife Alves were spotted in the stands throughout their week in Rio, indulging in some public displays of affection, with Alves even feeding her husband snacks in the stadium.
