ROSEBURG, Ore. -- An animal shelter in Roseburg is seeing a new surge in pet adoptions.

13-year-old Reese Weight adopted a dog named Ally last year at the Saving Grace Pet Adoption Center in Roseburg.

"She's the sweetest dog I could have asked for," Reese said. "She's my best friend. She's everyone's best friend."

Reese wasn't the only one that adopted a pet from the shelter in 2017.

Saving Grace had over a thousand pet adoptions last year.

Their goal is to introduce new programs so pets can have a forever home.

One of the center's new initiatives includes a cat working program.

"The kitties that come here are not all well-suited to be pet kitties," said Saving Grace executive director Wendy Kang.

This program is aimed at cats who are willing to get their paws a little dirty.

"...if people are interested in environmentally friendly pest control but looking for a mouser. whether it's for a barn, a winery, a workshop," Kang said.

Kang said it's important to find out what animal works for each owner.

For Reese Weight, she couldn't be happier with her decision to adopt Ally. "When you adopt them, they show you their gratitude every day after that. I know she does."

The center hopes to increase the number of animals adopted this year so every pet can find a forever home.
